“Hello, my name is name of girl, I am 9 years old, and this is my kill list.”
THANK HEAVEN FOR LITTLE GRRRLS is a dance-theatre performance for a cast of girls aged 8-12 years. The girls will build an edifice with power tools, live and in real time, in a metaphor for an imagined future.
THANK HEAVEN FOR LITTLE GRRRLS (THFLG) was created out of a desire to carve out space for young girls. Inspired by the devastating statistics that girls fall out of love with STEM subjects from the age of 11 onwards, and the Junkyard/Adventure Playground Movement, THFLG challenges how we see girls, asking questions about risk, childhood and control.
The lives of girls are being threatened by the rise of far right thinking, toxic masculinity and the pressures from social media; THFLG is a new performance seeking to challenge these notions where the girls are literally building worlds, and defining their own meaning.
The girls will upend the still held dynamic of woman as 'silent bearer of meaning, and not maker of meaning' (Laura Mulvey) by constructing a world for them to inhabit, play in, and ultimately exert their control.
Exploring play as a power tool to construct narrative, Jennifer has spent time in rehearsal rooms with groups of girls, leaning into chaos, asking the difficult question, what do girls want? And what do they need? and is an Artist the best person to provide any of this.
This work exists in conversation with, and is inspired by the work of Milo Rau, Kabinet K, Kopergiertery, Lies Pauwels, and Fevered Sleep, to ask questions about who is allowed to disrupt a theatre heirarchy and take their place on main stages.
